Regional Workshop for Journalist on Developing Diversity Journalism in Southeast Asia was participated by 18 journalists from 6 SEA countries and held in Bogor, 7-8 November 2019.

“LGBT is reported in the media as the cause of the earthquake in Palu or other disasters, such as tsunami and floods,” Alexa said in Regional Workshop for Journalist on Developing Diversity Journalism in Southeast Asia (SEA) was held in Bogor, 7-8 November 2019.

In this workshop that was participated by 18 journalists from 6 SEA countries, Alexa Dominich, a trans woman live in Bogor, said she deeply regretted the tendency of the media which reported in such a sensational way and full of hatred. Media published hoaxes and fake news about the LGBT community.

Democratic regression was caused by the strengthening of identity politics which then gave rise to populism created dangerous social polarization. In Southeast Asia, social tension resulted discrimination against minority groups and continue to increase. The growing use of the internet in the essentially weaponized hoaxes, fake news and hate speeches. However, conventional media are often equally culpable for their failure in maintaining high standards of reporting of tension and conflict between different groups. The discrimination that is often experienced by minority community is a result of inappropriate media coverage.

This workshop was held by The Journalists Association for Diversity (SEJUK) in collaboration with Sasakawa Peace Foundation, TIFA Foundation and The Netherland Embassy Jakarta has purpose for provides a space for journalist in SEA to start discuss, analyze the current update and challenges on the rise of identity-based conflict in this region and the role of media. Also proposed guideline on how to cover diversity issues.

More detailed information regarding this workshop has been compiled by SEJUK and can be accessed below.
